Mathematic is not a subject only, it is a way to understand various subjects that’s why Mathematicians are on high demand at world level. This was the conclusion of an expert talk organized by the department of Mathematical Sciences of I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University, Kapurthala. IITian Prof. Manoranjan Mishra from IIT Ropar focused upon the applications of mathematics in various fields. He motivated the students to take up Mathematics as one of their major subject to meet the growing demand of mathematicians in the world.

Prof. Mishra said that Mathematicians are desirous in research field of almost every subject of science and technology, may it be chemical sciences, life sciences, medicines, physics and engineering. He demonstrated the live examples of direct applications of mathematics in fluid dynamics, material sciences and computer science.

Responding to the queries of the students, the Bhatnagar awardee, Prof. Mishra explained about the various avenues after pursuing graduation and post-graduation in Mathematics. After qualifying GATE and many other scholarship tests students are eligible to work in various IITs and with the scientific groups of top Universities in the world.

Dr. Ashish Arora, head of the department of Mathematics, IKGPTU informed that the department has stared B.Sc. (Honours) program in Mathematics to cater the demand of Mathematician in the world. The objective of specialized undergraduate mathematics program is to develop young minds into skilled mathematical man power. The department is already running M. Sc. and Ph. D. programs in specialized subjects of Mathematics, he added.
