An Initiative to Protect Medical Staff from COVID-19

We support the medical staff & doctors, who are fighting daily to save the life of humans from COVID 19, I.K.Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) developed and manufactured a very unique product, i.e., Face shields for Medical Staff and Doctors. This initiative will fulfill the urgent need of Indian Medical Research Association (IMRA) for Doctors and Nurses who are treating COVID-19 patients. This information is shared by Cabinet Minister Sr. Charanjit Singh Channi, Minister for Technical Education and Industrial Training on Tuesday. He said that this is an outcome of regular efforts of State Technical Education for Technology revolution in the state of Punjab.

He shared that in the month of September 2018, an MOU was signed between Tata Technologies and IKGPTU on the initiative of State Government. The agenda of MoU was to uplift and promote Technical Education in the state by establishing 5 Centers for Innovation, Invention & Incubation (CIIITs) in the state at a cost of Rs. 739 Crore and this is the first big outcome of CIIIT. Minister Channi said that in future through technology innovations of these CIIITs will be provided to more various sectors of the state.

One this occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar Sharma, Vice Chancellor IKGPTU confirmed that in first phase, University’s target is to manufacture 2000 face shields for Kapurthala, Jalandhar and other nearby districts and in future University will provide the same to other states too. University will manufacture more as per the demand. VC Prof. (Dr.) Sharma said that on initial stage, University manufactured 50 pieces and handed over to required staff through district Kapurthala administration. Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala IAS Deepti Uppal give her thanks note to VC Prof. Sharma and said that it is a proud moment for Kapurthala District who is contributing towards world level crises management.

VC Prof. Sharma said that University has taken this initiative with Tata Technologies at Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Centre for Innovation, Invention & Incubation (CIIIT) main campus Kapurthala and Sultanpur Lodhi. By watching the requirement of medical staff these centres came forward with solution and start manufacturing face shield by using CIIIT facility (3D printing). He shared that TATA Technologies SMEs helped for the design and development of the product and CIIIT centers have started its manufacturing daily 45 number in each of the 2 centers. 50 face shields are already handed over to Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala in first instance.

Eminent Scientist & Chairman Board of Governors IKGPTU, Dr. S.K. Salwan congratulated the team IKGPTU and said that at work place our prime focus should be to facilitate not only our stakeholders but the country people too. He shared his thankful words with team IKGPTU & gave his satisfaction note that through Technical support we are achieving beyond expectations. ”We Indians are having amazing powers; just need to know how to contribute in each & every situation. I am sure; we have every solution with us according to situation.” Dr. Salwan added.

On this initiative Principal Secretary, Technical Education and Industrial Training IAS Anurag Verma said that it is great that under the umbrella of University, CIIITs are doing their best for the society to fulfill the current requirements of Medical Staff of the state. He shared that in 2018, CIIITs were established on the proposal of Technical Education Minister Sh. Charanjit Singh Channi. State government welcomed the proposal of Tata Technologies and decided to establish CIIITs at IKGPTU and now these centers has proven its worth and their initiative is highly appreciable.
