Batch 2023 B.Tech EE students visit to the sub station of IKG PTU Campus Kapurthala on dated 5th July 2024 during their BTEE-321-18 (after the completion of 2nd semester) training with Dr Akhil Gupta AP-EE
Asper the instructions and guidance issued under the supervision of Dr YS Brar HOD -EE, Dr Akhil Gupta AP-EE explained the students that main roles of substations is to convert electricity into different voltages. It is required so the electricity can be transmitted throughout the country at distant places and which can then be distributed throughout local neighbourhoods, our homes, businesses and commercial buildings. Importantly, Substations contain the switchgear equipment which allows the voltage of electricity to be transformed. The voltage is also stepped up or down through transformers. It is pertinent to mention that the transformers are electrical devices that transfer electrical energy by means of a changing magnetic field. They consist of two or more coils of wire and the difference in how many times each coil wraps around its metallic core will affect the change in voltage. This allows for the voltage to be increased or decreased. Substation transformers will fulfil different purposes in voltage conversion depending on where electricity is in its transmission journey.
